HONOLULU, HI – Chaminade University will induct Carolyn A. Berry Wilson and the 1982-83 Men’s Basketball team into the Silversword Wall of Fame at its fifth annual intercollegiate athletics gala. The event, which takes place on Friday, March 1, 2013, will start at 6:00 p.m. at the Ala Moana Beach Hotel (Hibiscus Ballroom).
Berry Wilson is the co-founder of Chaminade’s Hui ‘Ahinahina Booster Club, which serves as the main fundraising support for the University’s 10 sports programs. Her annual support has played a major role in the development of the athletics program, as she continues to provide opportunities in the classroom and on the field of play for Chaminade’s 120 student-athletes.
The 1982-83 Men’s Basketball team will be celebrating its 30th anniversary of one of the biggest upsets in sports history when they defeated #1 Virginia 77-72 on December 21, 1982. Led by head coach Merv Lopes, the Silverswords did the unthinkable by taking down one of the most successful programs in college basketball, which included 7 foot 4 All-American Ralph Sampson.
The gala will feature keynote speaker Bobby Curran, the radio voice for the University of Hawaii Men’s Basketball and Football team.
KHON2 News sports reporter Kanoa Leahey will also be on hand serving as the evening’s master of ceremonies.
With the strong leadership of event chair, Dr. Edison Miyawaki, the athletics gala has raised over $575,000 in four years. For more information on table sponsorships, or individual tickets, please contact Ryan Hirata at (808) 735-4764.
