CUH Softball: Swords Split Doubleheader with Pacific Lutheran 1-9 and 6-5

Hokama shines, going 3-3 in the second game

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 WAIPIO, HI – The Silverswords season is officially underway.  Chaminade, recently selected eighth in the ten team PacWest Conference, took on the Lutes of Pacific Lutheran this evening in a doubleheader at Central Oahu Regional Park.  Chaminade struggled in the opening game of the doubleheader, falling 9-1 in five innings.  Junior Letisha Vaba (Stockton, CA/San Joaquin JC) scored the lone Silversword run and freshman pitcher Brett Aspel (Redondo Beach, CA, Redondo Union) took the loss in her first game as a Silversword pitcher.
 
The Lutes had 11 hits in the opening contest, with PLU's Stacey Hagensen leading the way with two hits and two runs.
 
The Swords bounced back in the second game in a big way.  Freshman Shannan Hokama (Torrance, CA/South High) went 3-3, scoring two runs, including the leadoff double in the top of the seventh that turned into the winning run for the Swords.  CUH had eight hits in the game, including a solo homerun by junior shortstop Rayna Strom-Okimoto (Aiea, HI/Aiea High) in the second inning.
 
Freshman pitcher Kaitlyn Watanabe (Kula, HI/Baldwin High) earned the win for CUH.  She was also the hitter who grounded to the second baseman on the error that scored Hokama for the winning run in the seventh. 
 
Chaminade is back at CORP for a non-conference doubleheader against BYU-Hawaii on Saturday, February 11th.  First pitch is set for 12:00 PM HT. 
 
With the split with the Lutes, the Swords move to 1-1, 0-0 in PWC while Pacific Lutheran moves to 1-1 overall.
